Gilmour Results

The Gilmour Invite provided another week of faster times and ANOTHER open win by yet a different freshman.

The varsity team was asked to sit back for a mile to keep all 7 runners together before they were turned loose. The mission was accomplished as 7 runners hit the mile together in 31st place at 6:31. Kristin Karn worked all the way up to 9th place, with Kelly Gallagher getting to 17th, Melissa Bresnahan 20th, Erin Gaffney 22nd, Gabby Kreuz 23rd, and Jessica Sirchen 24th. As a team, the Jags were 3rd behind Solon and Mentor, both are teams that have crushed SJA earlier in the season but are barely holding off now.

In the open race freshman Celine Mangan stole the show with the first win of her CC career in 20:54. She did this with the help of senior Hannah Gaffney who ended up third. Many other huge performances were recorded on the day including letter-winning times by freshman Maggie Boyer and junior Marie McNamara. Check out the all-time list and class level records in the "links" section to the right to see all the changes. As a team, the JV (running short-handed) won the championship over perennial open powers Solon and Mentor.

See this link for all the results.

Mudfest at McDonough!

It was a brutally wet day at Forest Hills Park for all competitors. The further into the day we went the harder it rained and the muddier the course became. Conditions for the earlier races were completely unlike those for the last races, and the times reflected that fact. The famous hill was actually scarier to run down than up for most runners.

The first group to run was the JV team, which for us was our "C" team as we ran two varsity squads. Going against everyone else's "B" teams ours finished 6th out of 14 teams. Leading that group was freshman Maddy Lanning with a great 8th place run.

The open runners had the heaviest rains of the day literally running in a downpour. Four girls ran their first race of the season in this race - what a brutal way to start! Bridget Fibbi ran a steady race from start to finish and ended up leading the squad to the line with her 26th place. Casey Kramer and Sam Simone also had their best races of the season despite the conditions.

The varsity race was the last one of the day, so the course was chewed up, muddy, and in some cases under water. Despite missing two of the top three runners for the ACT, the "A" team managed a third place finish of 12 teams just nipping Shaker Hts. The "B" team finished 7th in the same race. Gabby Kreuz and Jessica Sirchen stood out for the "A" team while Celine Mangan and Maggie Boyer led the way for the "B" team.

Workouts Week of Monday, September 7

First some thank yous....

1. Thanks to Cathy and Kelly Gallagher for spearheading the team clothing for
this season. Everybody should use a Sharpie to put their names on the tag of
their shirts so that they don't get mixed with someone else. If you haven't
paid yet, please bring money to the Gallaghers soon!

2. Thanks to the team for the loud cheers during the half-marathon this
morning. You were quite vocal and the signs were great. I especially
appreciate the "eyes up" coaching advice - I got them back up after that
comment.

As a group we are off to a sluggish start. I'm guessing that is mostly because
we haven't done any race pace work yet, but that changes this week. If you look
at the team's 10 Commandments, having "Faith" is the first one. That can be
taken a lot of ways, but right now that mostly means have faith in yourselves,
your teammates, and your training. We WILL get faster, but we'll have to work
hard to get there. The varsity made that commitment to me after the race at
Walsh...I'm going to hold you to it.

Below is the plan for the next week and beyond.

Monday, September 8 - workout at memorial field done at 5:40...3 x 400, 1 x
1600, 2 x 800, 3 x 400 for groups 3 and 4. Groups one and 2 will have parts of
this, but not all.

Tuesday, September 9 - practice at SJA - typical Tuesday we will have team
meeting first then run, lift, etc...done by 5:15 for the shorter groups 5:30 for
the longer groups

Wednesday, September 10 - practice at Mastick - Time Trial #4 (last one for the
season). Should be done by 5:30

Thursday, September 11 - typical Thursday without Yoga. Done by 5:00

Friday, September 12 - This will be an early dismissal day - 11:00AM. Instead
of torturing everyone by making them stay late for practice, I will allow the
captains to run it. Team meeting in Room 331 at 11:20 then typical pre-meet
practice.

Team dinner at Harter's...ALL PARENTS INVITED...time to be announced. Directions not listed here - do not want that info to be public domain.

Saturday, September 13 - Meet at McDonough - it appears we will take the whole
team to McDonough. I will try to enter 2 varsities at this meet so we can have
14 run together. I'll bust out the purples again if they let us enter two
teams.

Sunday, September 14 - you're free from all Kieser Tyranny.

following week...
Monday - Mastick long run with fast last mile (same length as last run
hopefully)

Wed - workout with St. Ed's at memorial field - repeat 600's

Friday - leave for Dayton - All-Catholic meet

following week after that...
Monday Mastick cut down run

Wed - hopefully a workout at Edgewater with Iggy's

Friday - Gilmour Invite...to be determined if varsity is racing or not

Walsh Tomahawk Review

Today the cross country team went to the Walsh Tomahawk run. In the reserve gold race we had a front runner for the second week in a row. This time freshman Grace Harter took the lead about a half mile into the race and held on for victory in a PR of 21:53. Her's was the first of 12 PR's earned by the reserves. As a team, the Jags finished 2nd out of 9 teams.

The varsity finished 7th in a competitive field of 18 teams. The team welcomed back Kristin Karn who finished in 12 place overall. She was followed to the line by Kelly Gallagher, Melissa Bresnahan, Taylor Whisler, Gabby Kreuz, Erin Gaffney, and Emma Cleary.

SJA competed in the "varsity gold" and "reserve gold" races
