Directions to Scioto Downs for State Meet

I HIGHLY suggest you have a mapquest or google map of the area. The back door way can save a lot of time, but there are turns that can get you lost.

Cost of admission to the meet is $8.00 this year.

Directions to Scioto Downs
6000 South High Street
Columbus, OH

1 - **The standard technique
I-71 South THROUGH COLUMBUS
• If you are not familiar with I-71 in Columbus, you should know it hits downtown, makes a right turn toward the West, then has an exit to go South again when you’ve left downtown. Watch for the signs!
• Continue on I-71 South (toward Cincinnati)
• Take I-270 EAST for one exit
• Exit I-270 at Rt 23, which you will take south Scioto Downs is on the left side of Rt 23 about 2-3 miles south of I-270

2 - **The backway (the Kieser method, which is much faster)
This method is only for the directionally-skilled people of the world. This can save 10-30 min depending upon the traffic on Rt. 23. It is faster this way because there is much less traffic and you will be turning right into the parking lot instead of turning left, which takes forever.

Follow all the same directions above, but DO NOT take I-270. Continue south on I-71 to the next exit called Stringtown Rd.
• Turn left (east) on Stringtown and follow until it dead ends into Jackson Pike
• Turn Right on Jackson Pike
• The next turn is the hardest to find…You will be looking for Hibbs Rd, which is only on the left. It is small and comes up quickly. If you miss it you can continue to London-Groveport Rd (refer to the map).
• Take Hibbs until it dead-ends into London-Groveport and turn left on it.
• Take London-Groveport to Rt. 23, where you will turn LEFT. Scioto Downs will be on the right about 1 mile up from London-Groveport Rd.

For the week of Monday Oct 27

A quick reminder that money for the Fall Sports Banquet is due Tuesday of this week. The forms have been passed out to the team twice. Please get uniforms turned in if that hasn't been done yet.

Well - even though many of you are done, the good news is 9 of you AREN'T!!! If you were there Saturday you saw one of the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) races in school history. The team laid it on the line and showed that we are one of the best prepared post-season teams around! Below is the schedule for the week. There will be more info posted on the website as the week progresses. We are looking into the possibility of a "spirit bus" going down Saturday to cheer the team on.

All are invited to join in. The two official alternates are Hannah Gaffney and Celine Mangan. They will be practicing and traveling with the team all week.

Monday, Oct 27 - varsity practice at Mastick at 11:00 AM - easy 6 or 7 mile run.

Tuesday, Oct 28 - practice at SJA after school - brief meeting in 331, easy 30 min run, light lift

Wed, Oct 29 - practice at mastick - begin warm up at 3:30...light workout including an AT run then a few 400's after

Thursday, Oct 30 - typical Thursday - done early!

Friday, Oct 31 - team leaves for Columbus at 11:30. Jog course, go to hotel (tbd), get dinner, etc...

Saturday, Nov 1 - state meet at Scioto Downs in Columbus. Start time 2:50. The weather should be great!

More to come!!!

District Hardware!

The Edgewater District was more competitive this year than its been since the "super districts" nearly 10 years ago. With first place essentially unattainable for most teams, the goal was getting the second place trophy. It boiled down to SJA, Strongsville, North Royalton, and Shaker Hts for that spot.

Going in the team knew the order would probably be shaken up, but some big-time performances really turned heads. Most notably was the stand-out run by junior Taylor Whisler who made everyone proud with a big PR of 20:29. She finished as 4th girl on the team, her best ever for SJA. In front of her was Kristin Karn (6th, 19:23), Kelly Gallagher (11th, 19:58), and Jessica Sirchen (12th 20:00). Gabby Kreuz was the fifth scorer (27th, 20:40), Erin Gaffney (29th, 20:51), and Melissa Bresnahan (40th, 21:14) rounded things out.

The team wants to thank the parents and JV runners for their great support as well as the always appreciated fans like graduates Kenzie Bova, Jordan Daugherty, Sarah (and JJ) Welch, Katie Mone, not to mention Mr. and Mrs. Wolff who always come down for the district show. With all the comptition going on its a great reminder of the pride, tradition, and family atmosphere that this program has developed.

Next stop: JV runs at Walsh then Regionals at Glen Oak HS in Canton.

Week of Monday, Oct 13 (and beyond)

Please note: If you have any pictures from this season that you would like for me to use for the slideshow, please put them on a CD and give them to me soon. It takes too long to put the show together in the last week when I'm receiving last-minute pictures.

Ladies - this is it, the beginning of the second season (post-season). If you haven't been doing things correctly before, then you definitely should start today!

Monday, Oct 13 - Workout at Impett Park after school. All wup and wdn to be done there on grass. 3 sets of 4 x 400. Done by 5:30 - be picked up at Impett Park.

Tuesday, Oct 14 - Typical Tuesday. Done by 5:15.

Wednesday, Oct 15 - workout at Mastick - AT run with some speed work afterwards. Done by 5:15.

Thursday, Oct 16 - typical thursday with last Yoga day! Done by 5:30.

Friday, Oct 17 - pre-meet day (even for non-varsity runners). Start with meeting in room 331, then stretch and short run. Done by 5:00. Dinner at KGrrs, I believe.

Saturday, Oct 18 - Districts. Top 7 (Karn, KGrr, Bres, Kreuz, Sirchen, Whisler, EGaff). A plan will be hatched later, but typically we meet for a movie around noon then head to the meet as a giant team on the bus. If the school is available we may do this again, but I have to check the schedule. Race time 4:05!

Sunday, Oct 19 - there is a slight possibility the varsity may be asked to set a few hours aside to travel to the regional site (wherever it may be) on this day if I can get the van. If its Boardman, you should see the course because of the footing, if its NOT Boardman you should see the new course regardless.

Monday, Oct 20 - last meet of the year for JV at Walsh. Frosh and Soph run together in one race and Juniors/seniors together in a separate race. Times to be announced.

Tuesday, Oct 21 - ???

Wednesday, Oct 22 - If varsity doesn't travel to regional site on Sunday, then definitely on this day (since we have early dismissal). At this time my guess is the alternate site will be at Glen Oak High School in North Canton, which is actually 20 minutes closer than Boardman.

The Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

Estimated Travel Time 1:20-1:30 (depending on the mass of your foot).

The directions below were given to me by a friend who actually grew up 1 mile from the fairgrounds and now lives in Rocky River. Please consult a map for reassurance!

Take I-480 east into Rt 422 east (please watch the signs carefully)…this change happens near Bedford when I-480 runs into I-271.

Rt 422 East for a long way (30 miles??) to Rt 305.

Take Rt 305 East for a few miles and be sure to follow the signs. You can see on the map on the reverse side that it take a couple of strange turns.

Rt 305 will intersect with Hoagland-Blackstub Rd (which may also be called Bazetta – look for both names).

Turn left on Hoagland-Blackstub Rd and follow for a mile or two. Fairgrounds will be on the left.

Wednesday, October 8th - repeat 1000's (5 for varsity) and/or some 500's for JV - MAX pace...at Clague Park at the corner of Hilliard and Clague in Westlake. Done by 5:30.

Saturday, October 11th - Sim Earich meet at Trumbell County Fairgrounds. There will be one varsity squad. Sunday - sleep in!!!
