Week of October 24th

It is hard to believe this is our last week. It makes me pretty sad on many levels. I hope everybody holds their heads high, continues to do the right thing all the way through, and carries their personalities and perseverance to their winter training or winter sport - whichever it may be.
Please print and return the Fall Sports Banquet ASAP. It is linked under "important things" on the right.

Monday, October 24th - meet at Walsh Jesuit High School Cuyahoga Falls. I would like to leave at 1:45 although all previous notifications said 2:00pm. Please spread the word! As soon as everyone is there we'll go!
Frosh and sophs run at 4pm, juniors and seniors run at 5pm. Coach Kieser will join the varsity for a jog on the towpath while the JV warms up.

Tuesday, October 25th - Jogging Jaguars are meeting! CC team expected to join THIS WEEK! Get your permission form and t-shirt money in please!!!

Wednesday, October 26th - nothing planned

Thursday, October 26th - Jogging Jaguars. We will NOT be doing uniform turn in this day - I have to head east for a wake and funeral service.

Friday, October 27th - uniform turn-in and captain vote after school for 2012 season. ALL are expected to turn in uniforms in their entirety. You WILL be charged for missing pieces. If you have more than one jacket or pant please bring it in!

Saturday, October 28th - nothing planned but feel free to organize a run...its supposed to be nice-ish.

Sunday, October 29th - Amherst Skeleton Run and last chance lettering race. Sign up ahead of time online or sign up day of.

Districts Review

The SJA varsity cross country team wrapped up their season with a 6th place finish out of 14 teams at the district meet held Saturday at Strongsville High School. Quite possibly the most competitive district in the state, the Jags were up against some of the best teams in Northeast Ohio. Only 4 teams and individuals in the top 16 places qualified to the Tiffin Regional. For the first time in at least 12 years SJA will have no competitors move out of the district competition.

For the second week in a row, senior Jessica Sirchen led SJA to the wire finishing in 26th place. The SJA harriers packed in closely behind with Rachel McGuire 29th, Mary Kate Chambers 32nd, Alesha Vovk 36th, and freshman birthday-girl Mallory Fahey 39th.

The JV team wraps up their season at the Walsh Jesuit Warrior last chance meet on Monday, October 24th. Start times are 4pm for frosh/soph and 5pm for juniors/seniors.

Senior night a soggy success!

The rains have been here all along, but even 40 days and 40 nights weren't enough to dappen the spirits of the SJA cross country team as they celebrated their first ever Senior Night AND home meet!

SJA's JV squad battled Mentor's JV team to an actual tie 28 points to 28 points. Mentor won on the tie breaker by having the better 6th runner. Junior Helen Steve and sophomore Maddie Zimmerman were the first Jags to cross the line in 2nd and 3rd place. Jill Bresnahan moved up nicely during the race to finish as 3rd Jaguar and 5th overall. Senior Maggie Boyer ran one of her best races of the year to finish 7th overall. Junior Jessica Bresnahan finished 11th overall to round out SJA's scoring.

It has been a great season and we are all very fortunate to have had the seniors be part of it! Along with captains Mary Kate Chambers and Kara Hurley, the following seniors have been part of a very special family; Maggie Boyer, Sam Riley, Grace Harter, Summer Roberts, Maddy Lanning, Kristina Jackson, Kayley Dunn, Claire Konys, Bridget Fibbi, Julia Swit, and Jessica Sirchen.

Results are posted in the right-hand margin of this site.

Ohio Independent Schools Champs Review

Massillon High hosted the Ohio Independent Schools Championships for teams that don't have conference affiliations in the week leading up to the district tournament. To provide a little inter-team competition, SJA split their power into 3 evenly matched teams all running during the same race instead of just focusing on the regular results. Because of this, Laurel School won the title, but when looking at results it is obvious SJA had the best team by placing 4th through 9th.
Team "C", also known as "Powers" was the best placing team for SJA, followed by the "A" team then the "C". The top individuals regardless of team were in a different order than normal. Crossing the line first for SJA was senior Jessica Sirchen. She was followed by senior Mary Kate Chambers, sophomores Alesha Vovk and Rachel McGuire, then junior Emily Bauer. The next four were freshman Mallory Fahey, then three juniors; Jill Bresnahan, Bridget Egan, and Jessica Bresnahan.
There were many good performances in the rest of the race for SJA, including the Jaguar of the Meet performance by junior Mary Bridget Waters.
The results can be found linked at the right side of this website.
SJA next runs at the First Ever Home SJA Meet next Wednesday October 19th at South Mastick Picnic Area in the Rocky River Reservation. It will be senior night.

Legends Review

The cross country team traveled east to Trumbull County for the Legends Invitational. The weather was much more favorable, perhaps too much so with the temperatures, but the ground was still soft from the recent rains. Times were slow as a result, but the champions are determined by place, not time.

SJA finished 5th in a field of 13 teams. Senior captain Mary Kate Chambers ran steady from start to finish to snag 12th place overall. Rachel McGuire was 15th, Jessica Sirchen - back from a 3 week injury break - was the 3rd Jag in 34th place. Alesha Vovk was 41st and Maddie Zimmerman was 51st to round out the top 5 scores for SJA.

In the open race Jessica Bresnahan placed well in the open race earning 5th overall. Jill Bresnahan was next in 9th place followed by Sam Riley in 13th and Helen Steve in 14th.

SJA runs at the Independent Schools Championship hosted by Massillon High next Saturday before entering the post-season.

Gilmour Review

As the picture at the top shows it was a mud-fest at Gilmour! In a reflection of the weather that forced Monday's practice inside and Tuesday's practice onto the track, the rain hit Gilmour once again causing times to be forgotten, along with a few shoes...
SJA has been bitten by the injury and illness bug. The fact the team was able to muster a 6th place finish out of 14 teams is a reflection of the team's depth and commitment. As typical for Gilmour a team "pack" strategy was employed in which the whole varsity was supposed to stay together for one full loop on the two-loop course. For the most part the gang was together after a loop, then the top 3 in particular went crazy moving up from around 50th place to finish 10th (Mary Kate Chambers), 11th (Rachel McGuire), and 12th (Emily Bauer). Maddie Zimmerman, bumped up from JV to varsity just a couple of hours earlier actually finished as 4th runner with Jessica Bresnahan being 5th.
In the JV race, the boys and girls were combined in an effort to save daylight and temperature. This combining of races caused some problems as 11 SJA girls did not get their chips put on their shoes properly thus they did not show up in the race. Mallory Fahey, clearly second overall in the girls race did not show up in the results, but ran a very strong race. Molly Moore moved up nicely after the mile mark to finish as 4th girl, but again she did not have a chip on as well. The first "chipped" SJA girl was Helen Steve who finished 5th officially. The JV team, officially, was 6th, but if all our girls had been counted they would have won the title. I am still looking for those 11th girls to tell me where they were in the race so I can email the race director and maybe have those results inserted.
Team results not posted yet.
Gilmour results can be found on baumspage.

Week of September 26th

Hi all...we talked on Saturday about being in a position where we HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING BETTER THAN THE OTHER TEAMS for these last 4 weeks. We have the talent, but we need to catch up to teams that have a head start on us. Take this seriously!
The All-Catholic meet showed us that we still have a lot of work to do with regards to competing with the right people in the first mile, but we're ready for the challenge! To get a historical perspective on the All-Catholic meet, check the new page I added to the website under important links - see the history of SJA's performances and see how your time stands up.

return to SJA by 8:15
Saturday, Sept 31 - mastick - 9-10:30am...possible breakfast cookout???
Sunday, NOTHING!

All-Catholic Review

This past weekend the cross country team took its annual overnight to Dayton for the Midwest All-Catholic Championships. The varsity squad was missing 2 key runners from the top 5, so it was a great time for new runners to step up. Finding their way to those spots were Emily Bauer and Caitlin Nagy who, like 22 other teammates this weekend, ran season bests in helping the team earn 8th place at the Championship.
Mary Kate Chambers again was first to the line in a season best 20:22. Sophomores Rachel McGuire and Alesha Vovk were the 2nd and 3rd runners followed by Bauer and Nagy.
In the open race, freshman Lauren Marconi paced the way for the Jags with a letter-earning 21:51.
Individual SJA results can be found on the right side of this page.
Overall All-Catholic results can be found at www.carrollcrosscountry.org
Next weekend SJA will be competing at the Gilmour Invitational.

Open Door Review

In an effort to get the JV and open runners an extra race to make up for the "storm out" at Tiffin, SJA traveled to the Open Door Christian Academy Invitational on Tuesday September 20th to compete in a low key small race. While sitting out the top 15 runners, SJA's "C" team still competed well against 6 other school's varsity programs and nearly pulled off the win losing only to West Geauga (see the big trophy on the homepage).
Freshman Lauren Marconi was top finisher in 5th place for the Jags with a big PR of 22:30. Following Lauren to the line in all season best times were Maddie Miller, Ashley Klimczyk, Molly Moore, Colleen Kramer, Sara Hurley, and Maddy Lanning.
SJA's depth and dominance were even more prominent in the open race as the Jags took the top 12 positions. Winning the race with a spirited effort was senior Summer Roberts who ran a season best and near-PR of 23:30. Kristina Jackson set a personal best to bring home 2nd place, and Kaylay Dunn came in 3rd after months of frustrating injuries.
Another big SJA congrats goes to Halli Grunder for competing in her first ever cross country race - congrats Halli!
See SJA times posted in the "Open Door 2011" under the results section on the right of the blog

McDonough Invite Review

Going into the McDonough Invitational in Cleveland Hts the Jaguars knew the first group racing on the day was going to set the tone for the rest of the day, and what a tone they set! The JV team was on the schedule first and they did not disappoint as they took 5 of the top 8 places in the race and won the team division with a low score of 23 points. Breaking the tape first for SJA was senior Caitlin Nagy, who won the first race of her career. Behind Cait was freshman Mallory Fahey in 3rd, junior Jill Bresnahan 4th, sr. Maggie Boyer in 7th, and sophomore Maddie Zimmerman in 8th. Grace Harter rounded out the JV crew in 23rd place.
Next was the open race which saw junior Emily Bauer challenge for first place during the early stages of the race but eventually settled for a solid 2nd place out of 173 runners. Many of the open runners set season bests on the soft, muddy, hilly course.
Ending the day for SJA was the varsity race which featured over 6 of the best teams in Northeast Ohio. The jags had a shaky start, but worked their way up through the pack to the very last stride and snuck in a surprising 2nd place out of 15 teams. The Jags were once again led to the trophy by senior captain Mary Kate Chambers in 12th place. Jess Sirchen was close behind in 14th, with Rachel McGuire 18th, Bridget Egan 26th, and Alesha Vovk in 29th place to round out the scoring.

Wash Out in Tiffin

In more ways than one the SJA experience at the Tiffin Carnival ended up all wet. The varsity team, hoping to knock off some state ranked teams, found out exactly just how fast the best in the state are. The Jaguars ran some fast times, but it wasn't enough to overcome their 21st place finish in the Division I-A race.
Rachel McGuire was the first JAG across the line in 20:29. Mary Kate Chambers followed in 20:49, Jess Sirchen in 20:59, Bridget Egan in 21:36, Alesha Vovk 21:47, Jess Bresnahan 21:58, and Sam Riley in 22:09.
The JV/open runners did not get to race due to storms that moved into the area right before the race began.

Week of Monday, September 5th 2011

Last week was a good week in many ways. The team had a very successful workout on Wednesday and came back with a solid effort on Saturday against 4 of the best teams in Ohio. We’re on the doorstep of greatness, but we still have work to do.

As promised this week will be considered “down” in some ways because we won’t do any intervals so that we can feel a little recovered for Tiffin, however we still have to get work in. We will do a threshold run on Monday and some pick ups on Wednesday. The rest of the week will be about the same as usual. Athletes have to keep bearing the responsibility of getting as much sleep as possible, using ice baths when necessary, taking multi-vitamins, eating properly and staying hydrated. Above all they should be getting good grades, NOT getting infractions, and being great teammates. It’s a tough sport to succeed in, but with good teammates it makes it a lot more enjoyable.

Temps are supposed to be below 80 all week! But also threat of rain each day. Pack clothes accordingly.

Monday, Sept 5 – 2 OPTIONS for times, but both do same workout – AT run (tempo)
You are expected to attend one or the other EXCEPT for athletes too injured to run at all.
Option 1 – 9am to 10:30 at Mastick
Option 2 – 6pm to 7:30 at Mastick

Tuesday, Sept 6 – SJA 3:25-5:15. post-race team meeting in 331, then run, mini-hurdles, hip mobility, lift

Wednesday, Sept 7 – early dismissal for students, but I still have meetings til 3:30. Practice at Mastick 3:40-5:15. over-distance run with pick-ups at the mile marks.

Thursday, Sept 8 – regular Thursday – 3:25-5:00 and you shall ICE! Nobody runs this day.

Friday, Sept 9 – pre-meet day – team meeting in room 331 followed by pre-meet run, striders, stretch. Team dinner hosted by the Bresnahans and Sirchens presumably at SJA around 5pm.

Saturday, Sept 10 – Tiffin Carnival.
Tiffin is about 1:40 away by car. Parking will be crowded – this is a GIGANTIC meet.
Bus leaves SJA at noon (sleep in, eat a full, appropriate breakfast)
Varsity A women – 4pm (Chambers, McGuire, Sirchen, Vovk, Egan, Riley, Jess Bres)
Div I open women – 4:55 pm (all the rest)
6:15pm – leave for SJA – return around 8pm

Sunday, Sept 11 – optional long run day. Athletes may be asked to go long on their own on this morning. I will try to organize something with the captains during the week.

Go Jags!

Ashland gets HOT!

The day before the Ashland Invitational news came out that some new teams were going to be joining the field at the Ashland Invitational. The additional talent only added to the heat of the day as some early season battles shaped up.
While hoping to knock off some ranked teams, the Jaguars ended up 5th place out of 11 complete squads in the large school division. All 4 teams that beat SJA are pre-season ranked in the top 20 in the state.
For the second week in a row the first three runners were Mary Kate Chambers (sr./15th place), Rachel McGuire (so./17th place), and Jessica Sirchen (sr./23rd place). Rounding out the scoring for SJA was 4th runner Alesha Vovk (so./30th place) and Bridget Egan (jr./33rd place). Next week's varsity squad was determined by the 6th and 7th placings on the team of Sam Riley (sr./38th place) and Jessica Bresnahan (jr./45th place).
While not a scored event, it doesn't take too much in the math department to figure the JV scores by hand. SJA CLEARLY had the best JV team in the race getting it's 5 runners in before all but one other school had ANY runners in.
On a hot day we give special notice to the 4 girls who ran personal bests - all are first year runners - Mallory Fahey, Clare Fibbi, Maureen Borden, and Melyssa Jackson. Great job, girls!
Next week the team makes the trip to Tiffin for one of the largest invitationals in the whole country the Tiffin Carnival!

For Week of Monday, August 29th

Hi all, (pictures Monday, pictures Monday, pictures Monday, pictures Monday – bring uniform tops and ALL black shorts)

Before anything else – I have to thank the many parents who have already spoiled the heck out of the team.
Big thank you to Julia Swit’s mom who brought pre-meet dinner TO South Mastick park so the team could enjoy eating together in the pavilion right after practice. She then did double duty by bringing more bagels than Panera could provide then very next morning for the team to have at the meet. Very generous!
Another big thank you to the Harter family who hosted both parents and athletes alike the night before the Early Bird race. Apparently they had so much food leftovers were brought to the meet the next day. Thank you!
And as part of the Early Bird post-race race spread, the McGuire and McGinty families helped turn the post-race food into a full buffet! Thanks!
I know the team LOVES being spoiled like that after a tough race, so it is appreciated by all!

(also before anything else, runners especially READ the post-meet notes about Berkshire at the very end of this posting - if you were slower this year this may make you feel better. Also I calculated some JV results too - check it out!)

School is in full swing that will force us all to get into a regular routine that has to include proper sleeping, hydrating, and eating habits. Parents - you have my permission (not that you needed it) to take away your daughter's cell phone, computer, and TV privileges if they aren't going to bed at a decent hour EVERY night! :-)

Last week was a very strong week for training and it was followed by a solid first meet. The coaches are hoping to get another good week of training leading up to the Ashland Invite then back off some heading into the Tiffin Carnival. Please call, text, email if there are any concerns. Parents - please treat Mondays and Wednesdays as if they were meet days and try to schedule any appointments on Thursdays IF it has to be done after school. Friday is next best followed by Tuesday.

This week:
Monday, August 29th – Pictures first, then South Mastick 5:15 – 6pm (due to pics). CC team supposed to go at 3:45. Don’t diddle – get ready ASAP. Workout is medium long run with 1 minute pick ups at the mile marks (NOT a hard day)
Tuesday, August 30th - SJA 3:20-5:15 - brief post meet meeting in 331 then practice. Shorter mileage, mini-hurdles, abs, weight room.
Wednesday, August 31st - Memorial Field - 3:40-5:30 (this may be early dismissal day but lets keep this schedule anyway) - ladder workout - HARD mile, 2 medium hard 800s, 4 fast 400's. LOTS OF REST between. If raining workout done at SJA.
Thursday, September 1 - SJA 3:25-5ish. typical Thursday - stations then Yoga.
Friday, September 2 - SJA 3:25-5:10. Pre-meet meeting in 331 for goal-setting then pre-meet day same as last week. Pasta dinner hosted by the Lannings at SJA. Expected start time between 5:15 and 5:30 (some athletes will be running at South Mastick to avoid sidewalks).
Saturday, September 3rd – Bus leaves SJA EARLY! 6:45 leave time, 9:30 race for ALL on the team, and we’ll stop at Lodi Crossing for an hour on the way home. Back by 2pm (ish).
Sunday, September 4th – nothing planned.
Monday, September 5th (Labor Day) – no canoe trip planned at moment, however the team can discuss plans for this day during the week leading up. We NEED to meet in some capacity to get a practice in.

Notes on the Early Bird Invitational
1. SJA had the FASTEST 5th runner (Emily Bauer)
2. Our ‘B’ team (8-12 runners) scored 196 points which would have been 8th place out of 16 teams.
3. Our ‘B’ team was clearly the best 2nd unit out there beating Chardon’s 196 to 366.
4. We had 7 before Chardon’s 5th and 12 runners finish before Chardon’s 6th.
5. Our ‘C’ team’s 5th runner (our actual number 19 Summer) finished before Chardon’s ‘B’ team’s 5th runner (but their B team barely beat our C).
6. The course this year was obviously slower…cases in point.
a. Overall winner was 27 seconds slower than last year and could be more fit this year.
b. Last year’s 8th place was this year’s 8th place and slowed down 1:10!
c. 21st from last year was 3rd this year and slowed down 3 seconds…yeow!
d. Mary Kate is more fit this year and lost 18 seconds.
e. Last year’s 11th was 19th this year and lost 1:23!

And we're on our way at the Early Bird!

As with any team in any season great anticipation comes with the first actual competition and for the runners on the SJA cross country team the first meet exceeded almost all hopes.
Running for the third year at Berkshire's Early Bird Invitational SJA finished a solid 2nd place just 8 points behind the winning team from Chardon. Setting the tone for the first meet was a strong three-some of Rachel McGuire (so) in 6th place, Mary Kate Chambers (sr) 7th place, and Jessica Sirchen (sr) in 9th place. To round out the scoring the Jags took 16th place by Bridget Egan (jr) and 22nd place Emily Bauer (jr). The rest of the team finished strong as well as the second team would have finished 9th in the 16 team varsity field.
Competing and finishing in their very first ever high school cross country races were freshmen Mallory Fahey, Lauren Marconi, Audrianna Farris, Clare Fibbi, Maureen Borden, and Erin McGinty. Also competing for the first time were sophomore Mary Kelley, juniors Melyssa Jackson and Ashley Klimczyk, and senior Kristina Jackson. Congrats to all! Next week the cc team will be competing at the Ashland Invitational.

For Week of Monday, August 22, 2011

Greetings All! Hopefully you have checked the team website to follow up on the results of our first competition at the Moose is Loose relay. There are pictures as well linked on the right side.

We have completed 2 weeks of practice officially and we are heading into the school year now. In terms of attendance we have NOT had all 46 girls at one practice (out of 9 tracked practices). Additionally we had a practice last Saturday in which 20 girls were not in attendance. That practice was poorly understood and is partly my fault, but missing 20 girls for a long run is painful.

With practices starting up after school we would like to ask parents and athletes alike to set up an informal process of how the younger athletes get rides to the nearby parks. Since before I’ve been coaching we’ve always had athletes driving to the practices at closer parks – this saves the school a tremendous amount of money (bus costs are through the roof), time (there are 5 fall sports teams sharing busses as is), and gives us more freedom and flexibility. What we don’t want are kids cramming into cars like clowns creating dangerous situations. If parents have the means to come to school and give their daughters a ride to practice, especially the younger ones then that would be a great help. Traditionally the younger runners find rides with the older girls who have a car to drive. We’re hoping a set routine can get established where the older girls take initiative to find the non-drivers and make sure they take the same runners each time. Parents, if you could please talk to your daughters about who they should and shouldn’t ride with and see how this works out. And please remind the older girls about safe driving habits. We are VERY lucky to have a great park system so close that we can use – it would be a shame to lose this privilege. If there are practices scheduled further away than 3-5 miles then we’ll definitely schedule a bus.

Moose is Loose!

The cross country season is officially one week away, but the SJA team went to Malone University to run in the Moose is Loose race - an unoffical "scrimmage" in which teams of 5 runners each run a two mile cross country loop on the campus. Along with the heat, grass, and hills were 2 log jumps, a mini-swamp, and an steeplechase water pit (see pics linked to the right). To top it off a Malone runner wearing a giant mascot moose head was on the course "tagging" people for 5 second penalties. Luckily no SJA runners were tagged!

SJA had 8 teams start the day. In the end, the team known as "NSync" comprised of Maureen Borden, Rachel McGuire, Kristina Jackson, Mary Kate Chambers, and Annie Grove was the top SJA finishers. It doesn't hurt that by random picking they had the 2 faster runners for SJA on the day with Rachel McGuire running 13:52 for 2 miles and Mary Kate Chambers running 14:24 for the distance.

It was impossible to compare SJA's results to other teams, but for the Jaguars it was a great learning experience for the season. Next Saturday the first official meet will be the Berkshire Early Bird Invitational held at the Geauga branch of Kent State University in Burton.

For Week of Monday, August 15, 2011

Greetings all - this will be the first of a season of weekend postings describing the up-coming week's practice times, locations, and other important information. All of these will be posted on the website and email to each parent and athlete. Parents, if I do not have your email, please send it to me to include you on regular emails. My email is posted on the right side of the website - fkieser@sja1890.org

Important bits of information for this week:
There are a lot of athletes who have not turned in all their Fairview and EMA forms (as well as team contracts). Please do so this week to Coach Kieser.

I have created an "editable" spreadsheet for parents to sign up for hosting/co-hosting team dinners or to bring bagels and fruit to each meet. It is linked on the team website on the far right under "schedule, calendar, roster, and food sign up". You should be able to type your name in the appropriate block. Let me know if this does not work. Hopefully senior parents can get first crack at this, as typically they like to chip in.

Tuesday's and Friday's locations at SJA have been changed to Mastick.

There is no scheduled practice Monday, HOWEVER it is begged that the athletes get to the school's weight room (or their own) either on Monday or Tuesday to get their weight room work in. The facility should be open, especially before noon. Call Coach Kieser if there is a problem.

Monday, August 15th - no practice (lift on this day or Monday on your own)
Tuesday, August 16th - Mastick 9-10:45 (regular run with pipe hurdles)
Wednesday, August 17th - Westlake Rec center 9-11am(combo hills and tempo)
Thursday, August 18th - SJA 3:30-5:15 (cross train day like last week and uniform pass out)
Friday, August 19th - Mastick 3:30-5:15 (regular run - NOT tapering for Saturday's relay practice)
Saturday, August 20th - Moose is Loose at Malone University. Bus leaves at 7:30 AM. Relay begins at 10am.
Sunday, August 21st - Group 3 - 4 miles on your own, Group 4 - 6 miles on your own. Groups 1 and 2 cross train for an hour on your own)

Lastly - athletes I have named captains for each Moose team. Your job is to let me know what your team name is, confirm that you have a team "uniform", and let me know what the order of your squad will be. You are NOT allowed to run a new runner on first or last leg.

Moose team captains
Team 1 Konys
Team 2 Jess Bres
Team 3 K Jackson
Team 4 Egan
Team 5 Swit
Team 6 Fibbi
Team 7 Boyer
Team 8 Nagy
Team 9 Roddy

Saturday's Practice on August 13 at Towpath in Brecksville

First, I'm sorry for the confusion on this. This was left open-ended for either Saturday or Monday. It was hinted to me by a few that Saturday just worked better for rides, etc...

Second, we had an EXCELLENT first week with a great time trial today, so I'm hoping we can finish it off with a good long run on Saturday.
See the results of the time trial and how FAVORABLY we compare to last year already. A wise person will be able to disect just how well today went.

So...

Practice Saturday at Station Road Bridge Parking lot which is part of the Brecksville Reservation where it meets the Cuyhaga Valley National Park.
Here is a link to the map: click here

From SJA/Westside: I-480 or I-90 east to I-77 south. Exit Rt 82 EAST (west does have a separate exit). Follow Rt 82 east PAST Rt 21 by about 2 miles. Turn right on Riverview down the hill. Turn left at the bottom of the hill into the park's driveway. You'll cross train tracks and be at the parking lot. We did go to this location once last year. Even though its only Brecksville this is still a full 25-30 min drive, but the terrain is worth it once in a while.

Parents are welcome to come run, bike, or otherwise workout. Also feel free to bring bagels, fruit, etc...

This is a "long run" day. I'm hoping the athletes will go for their longest run of the year with the longest group doing 10.

I will be running with friends hoping to finish right at 9am. I might be a few min late depending upon my pace (or lack thereof). The shortest group will be done by 10:30-10:40, the longest group done by 11:00am.

If you cannot attend you should run the long run ON YOUR OWN!!!

Upcoming schedule and important dates and times!

We have a busy, busy time coming up before school starts, so the follow is intended to help you set your schedules to avoid conflicts. We are sympathetic to travel issues, timing, and life so please communicate with Coach Kieser or Coach McHenry if problems or conflicts arise. We have intentionally not turned the screws on the team during the summer with the expectation that when the official season begins the girls can make their full dedication to the team. Remember staring August 8th practice attendance is mandatory, OHSAA physicals must be turned in, and our attendance policy kicks in.

Most importantly (other than physicals) is the MANDATORY PARENT MEETING. This is a meeting where policies will be addressed, and parents can meet with coaches. Coach McHenry will be at this meeting since I’ll be at camp with the team.
This meeting with the AD is for all parents of ALL fall sports athletes (even if parents are at camp) at 7pm in the gym on Thursday, August 28th.
If you cannot attend this meeting there is a follow-up date on Monday, August 1 in the gym at 7pm.

Starting July 24th 26 girls will be at team camp until the 29th. During that week Coach McHenry will hold conditioning at the following times and locations for the girls NOT going to camp.
Monday, July 25 – 6-7:30 pm at Mastick – regular mileage run plus abs, push-ups, and 4 x 20 lefts.
Wednesday, July 27 – 6-7:30 pm at Cedar Point road – hill repeats.
(meet for this run on Cedar Pt road at parking lot just west of the river and Valley Parkway).
Friday, July 29 – 6-7:30 pm at Mastick – longer run than Monday by mile or 2.

Week of August 1st – the workouts for this week or highly encouraged, but will not fall under our attendance policy. I will be at the second week of NEO camp, but the whole team should be available to meet Coach McHenry. After a big week of camp this week should be lower key (but not off).

Monday, August 1st – 6-7:30 pm Mastick – regular mileage run.’
Wednesday, August 3rd – 6-7:30 pm Mastick – fartlek.
Thursday or Friday captains can organize their own run.

Official practices before school starts…OHSAA physicals MUST be in our hands!
Monday, August 8th – SJA 9-11am
Tuesday, August 9th – Memorial field 9-10:45am
Wednesday, August 10th – mastick 9-10:45am
Thursday, August 11th – SJA – 9-11am
Friday, August 12th – Mastick – 9-11am – time trial #2

Sat and Sun – no practices scheduled

Monday, August 15th – long run at towpath, station road bridge parking lot Brecksville…if this is better to be done on Saturday we can trade a Saturday practice for Monday. I’ll need feedback!
Tuesday, August 16th – SJA – 9-11am
Wednesday, August 17th – Westlake Rec – 9-10:45 am
Thursday, August 18th – SJA – 3:30-5:15 – cross training and weight room

The next few weeks...

Below is the schedule of things that are happening in the next few weeks. These are very important so please pay attention.

Most importantly athletes MUST have a current OHSAA physical in order to begin official practice on August 8th. Get those done soon, please!

Week of July 19, 2011 - SJA Youth CC camp for 4th-8th graders. We take registrants on the first day at the school. Registration information can be found toward the bottom of the school's home page at www.sja1890.org

Current SJA CC team members who are available should be at SJA by 8:45 on Monday and by 9am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. You get service hour credit for this!

There is no practice scheduled for next Friday by the coaches but there may be a captain's practice - stayed tuned to them.

Week of July 26, 2011 -
26 runners will be at the NEO CC Camp for the week beginning on the 25th. They are gone until Friday. Coach McHenry will be holding practice for the athletes staying home at locations and times to be determined both this week and the following week of August 1st.

The first official practice is at SJA on Monday, August 8th from 9-11am. This practice is mandatory and with it begins the new attendance policy that was sent home to all the athletes this summer.

Friday, June 17, 2011

It's Time!

Welcome to all the parents, athletes, and fans of SJA Cross Country! We're back and better than ever and ready to roll.

Our first conditioning session is this Monday, June 20th at South Mastick Park. Please see the directions folder linked on the right and plan on starting on time! Expect to use the whole time from 9am to 10:30.

You should be prepared for each practice with the following...
good shoes****
water bottle
watch*********
towel would be good for sit-ups
maybe bug lotion?
Don't forget to get your physicals done and turned in ASAP and please bring your signed contracts and information forms too!
